Kansas Legislature in 2010

The Latino Informational Network of Kansas is gearing up for its 3rd year of coverage at the Capitol. In the past years, we have been witness to a number of bills that have affected our community.  Each time we have fought back hard against these bills and we have won with the help from legislators on both sides of the aisle, community groups from across the state and gente just like you.

In 2010, we will have a few things to watch:

– Added cuts to programs in a variety of departments that seek to make up for the expected $392 million dollar shortfall in the state’s revenue or a tax increase

There are a few approaches that are available here: a) across the board cuts advocated by conservatives republicans and b) a more precise surgical approached advocated for by moderate republicans and democrats c) tax increase on cigarettes; 1% sales tax increase d) a combination of all or none of the above.

We need to keep a close eye on what is happening to make sure that our community is not disproportionately affected.

– Election Politics

2010 is also an election year and some politicians will be eager to use the politics of fear to advocate for the passing of many laws to punish and  intimidate various communities in Kansas. Our undocumented hermanos and hermanas will  be easy targets and will be used to spread panic and anger.

Como siempre, we will continue to keep you updated on new developments in the Capitol and how they affect the Latino community across Kansas.

Atentamente,

Lalo Munoz
