El pueblo unido, jamas sera vencido!

Yesterday’s Update

Yesterday, supporters of harsh state immigration laws spoke in the Capitol.  These supporters included Kris Kobach and a few other supporters but that was all. They did their best to explain why these immigration bills are best for Kansas and how they don’t encourage racial profiling. There were lots of questions from legislators some friendly to our cause others not. We’re still not sure how they might vote but we’ll keep working to get a better sense as soon as we can.

A few other individuals were allowed to testify against these immigration laws because they were coming in from out of state. They included the Garden City Police Chief as well as a representative from the Lenexa Police department. Both discussed the limited manpower and financial resources that each organization has and the fact that being required to handle these additional responsibilities would take away from other duties; primarily the safety of the community. In addition, they were very cautious of the being required to ask individuals for proof of legal status based on “reasonable suspicion”.

Today supporters like you and I have a chance to speak against immigration  laws coming to Kansas. The committee will begin at 1:30pm in Room 346-South in the Capitol. We hope to see as many of you as possible. They will hear as many individuals as possible today and the rest will have a chance to speak on Friday.

There has been so much support from individuals across the state. Its been a long week working against these bills and despite our uphill battle we have continuously out represented our opponents on these issues at least 5-to-1.

Thank you!

A rally put together by KanVote, Sunflower Community Action and other groups from across the state made its presence known yesterday as they protested yesterday. It was a great to see close to 400 Latinos from across the state united together. While i was in the committee hearing, the group could hear the chants “El pueblo unido, jamas sera vencido!”.

It was truly inspiring and democracy in action!
